https: and default (defunct) directory

I am totally lost. If I go to any of the sites on my server https://www.asite.com/ I see a bunch of files and folders for a combination of serveral sites. What is the deal here.

As well a newbie ?, I am former Plesk user, each site had a https folder, what is the equivalent here? I see that if I go to https://www.asite.com/index.htm. The same file in the public_html is pulled up, but if I go to https://www.asire.com/aprogram.exe it is not found. Why is this?

I think you have to get a security certificate and install it and then it will work. I have tested on and this is what I discovered that when you go to the https it just pulls the files from the regular public_html but in a encrypted setting. I have not completed the testing but this is what I think I have discovered. I wish someone would post and let me know if this was correct. Especially before I spend the money to buy an actual certificate of my own or my clients buy one.
