    Default If it ain't broke...

    Just over a year ago, I migrated to a dedicate server prebundled with Cpanel. I am set to Automatic Release tree. Other than adding RBLs to Exim, I have not tweaked anything on this server.

    I'm curious to know if should consider any updates at this time? My concern is that if I continue on "auto-pilot" so to speak, will I eventualy find myself in a difficult situation in terms of the kernel, MySQL etc.

    Some of my current versions are as follows:

    Kernel: 2.6.10-1.771_FC2
    MySQL: 4.0.25-0
    Apache: 1.3.33

    I don't have a very strong Linux background, which is why I'm on cPanel. I'd very much appreciate any comments regarding the need for updating, outside of cPanels auto updates.

    thanks,
    Tim

    cPanel's nightly run of /scripts/upcp should sort out most updates. /scripts/upcp should run yum for you each night which should handle most OS apps for you.

    Since you're on FC2, you'd need to change your update mirrors on /etc/yum.conf. FC2 died some months ago and since then it's being maintained by the Fedora Legacy Project.

    You should follow their guide for updating /etc/yum.conf to ensure that you're getting all the OS updates you should.

    (This is a bit lower level than I'm used to...)

    Here's my current /etc/yum.conf.

    There's quite a difference from mine versus the one listed on http://fedoralegacy.org/docs/yum-fc2.php

    Should I make mine match theirs exactly, except for retaining my "exclude" line?

    thanks

    For anyone else who may use this thread in the future, I made the following changes in my /etc/yum.conf file.

    [main]
    distroverpkg=redhat-release

    [base]
    name=Fedora Core $releasever - Base
    baseurl=http://download.fedoralegacy.org/fedora/$releasever/os/$basearch

    [updates]
    name=Fedora Core $releasever updates
    baseurl=http://download.fedoralegacy.org/fedora/$releasever/updates/$basearch

    [legacy-utils]
    name=Fedora Legacy utilities for Fedora Core $releasever
    baseurl=http://download.fedoralegacy.org/fedora/$releasever/legacy-utils/$basearch

    Everything appears to working fine now.
