If you set default address to :blackhole: or :fail: mail to admin address fails

We're running WHM 9.9.8 & cPanel 9.9.8-R160.

Today, I discovered the following default mail address problem.

When you set the default address to :blackhole: or :fail: no such address here, messages to the admin user will either not get delivered (in the case of default address set to :blackhole: ), or will bounce (in the case of default address set to :fail: ). Messages sent to other mailbox users on the domain are fine, it's just messages to the admin user which fail.

Has anyone else noticed this problem? This is on RHES.

I've tested this problem on three servers, all exhibit the same wrong behavior.

Yes, this has been the case for cPanel for a very long time. It's a well known quirk of their implimentation of Exim. The way around this to to create a new Mail account with the original accounts name as account@domain.com and then use that instead of simply account as the login username plus the assigned password. Emails will then be delivered for account@domain.com to that account.

Wow, we switched to cPanel several months ago and this is the first I've noticed this! Thanks for the info, I didn't realize it was a known issue.
