Default Inbox Lock - People with this problem please read!

    Hey guys,

Right as you all probably know alot of people are having trouble with inbox locks.

I have a few cpanel server and get the problem fairly regularly.

I normally find that its only customers who send large emails 10MB approx or those who keep their mail on the server for a few days.

Now telling the customers not to send 10MB emails or not to keep emails on the server would probably work but I know my customers will just say "Well I can do it with my ISP why cant I do it on your systems?"

So the point of this post was to get all the people who get this to post and then hopefully raise a bug with cpanel.

So please post your cpanel setup data and your experiences of the problem here.

Hopefully we can help get this fixed.

    Thx guys

P.S Could a mod make this sticky pretty please

We never have this problems as we educate our clients. The problem is not with the server, but most likely with the internet connection from their PC through to the server (i.e. timeouts). POP3 email should never be used for email storage - if they want to do that they should use IMAP as that protocol is designed for such use. Similarly email was never designed for such huge attachements (a 10MB attachment can easily bloat to over twice the size after it's been base64 encoded) and if you're having clients sending such large emails, I'd suggest that you modify the exim configuration to only allow at most 5MB attachments, which is the nominal size that, for example, sendmail configures.

This is a user usage issue, not a server configuration one.

    Shouldn't it be:
    message_size_limit = 5M

BTW your avatar needs to be re-uploaded, it's corrupted.

In addition most of these lock problems come from Outlook and Outlook Express. If the client does not let it complete its process Outlook will not release the lock it creates when checking pop. Typically when we have this problem the users mailboxes are full or they have Outlook checking more than every 2 minutes which is too short of a time for Outlook to release locks.

I would like to know why keeping mails on server could cause this trouble ?

I personally leave the mails on servers because i want to be able to access it from my cell phone and still receive them on my pc or vice-versa...

Like was said earlier pop3 is not designed to leave messages on the server. If you want to leave them on the server for mutli place access use one of the webmails like horde and squirrel

It doesn't seem to me that telling people to set their email clients to check mail any less frequently is really the right answer. The entire world uses POP and not everyone is having this problem, so there must be a solution.

As a workaround (until we really get maildirs rolled in or some other solution) could be to drop the retry time on these deferred emails to five minutes or so, and then rerun the mail queue every five minutes. This would mean that even if it gets deferred, it's only going to sit in the queue for ~5 minutes. The problem of course is that I can't seem to edit the exim.conf to actually drop the retry time to anything less that 15 minutes.

    Any ideas from anyone?

Thanks for the update Nick, this is great news!

I was wondering if you had any suggestions as a workaround before maildir enters production use for dropping the retry time in exim.

    Thanks!
