Installing innodb on an existing server

Howdy.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. Have you installed innodb or do you know if installing innodb on a server that already has customer sites on it will cause an derogatory effects on those account? IE can I expect customer databases to be corrupted or anything like that?

InnoDB is just the engine and it wont cause any problems for the databases currently running on the server

FYI - I don't use it and encourage customers to avoid it as things tend to get corrupt (just through experience, Imo!)

Ive had a hand full of request by customers to be able to run/use Magento, and it appears that Magento requires that innodb be available.

I guess I'll run a backup and install it and see how it goes.

More feedback from others that have used it would be helpful.

Actually innodb is not required for Magento ...

Run it with clients all the time without innodb and without problems.
(disabled for performance and stability reasons)

I went ahead and downloaded it, and then tried to install it. This is the result.

Database server does not support InnoDB storage engine
Database connection error

Ideas?

It appears that Magento has always required InnoDB be installed but never started inforcing it until version 1.2.1.

Yes Magento does require InnoDB (at least by default) and so we have to enable InnoDB on servers. While I would rather not have to enable InnoDB support, it is currently necessary for us purely for Magento (I wonder if InnoDB use is part of why Magento is so heavy).

I would love to see the option in WHM to enable or disable MySQL options such as this and query/slow-query logging.
