Default IP Address Usage - Why do IP's disappear once used?

I am frustrated to no end

I have 10 available ip's on my server. Every time I create a new account I pick an ip to use for that site. Once I have used an IP for an account, that ip disappears out of the avilable ip list, so when I go to create another account it won't let me use that ip again

how can I get WHM to allow me to use the same IP for multiple accounts?

    You can't.

You can have 1 shared IP and all other IP's can only be used once.

I added a Bugzilla request about this about a year ago whereby a pool of IP addresses can be nominated as shared IP addresses, and the user can pick one when creating a site.

This seems to me to be a very simple mod, and one that would be very useful for multiple separate IP blocks.

You can do it manually by creating a site and then editing httpd.conf for the alternative IP address. Be sure you have a "NameVirtual" statement as well for the IP and also you will have to manually edit the NS zone.

so, i am down to 2 ip addresses left now...what happens when I use those 2 up?

I have a hosting script that has no trouble assigning multiple accounts to the same ip, and it showing up in WHM that way...so i don't understand why WHM won't allow it on it's own

Whenever I've created an account manually in WHM I've never assigned it an IP and WHM has always set them up using one shared address. Have you tried just not selecting an IP?

well, i have specific IP's that I am using for specific things...and I want to keep them grouped like that...

I also have some specific content sites that I don't want showing up on the same ip as the the non-specific content ip's

basically, i want to have complete control over the ip address usage

there is two ways to do what your asking with WHM

    1. create a reseeller account with a different shared ip than your main shared ip and when you want to add a site on that ip add it through the reseller you created

    or

2 . change the main shared ip between the different ips and add the site then change it back to the ip that suits you for your main ip

I must be overlooking it, i don't see "Setup Shared IP" anywhere in the WHM
    WHM (root)
    Basic cPanel/WHM Setup
" The IP address that will be used for setting up shared IP virtual hosts. This can only be one address. Do not enter multiple addresses"

    (for resellers)
    Manage Main Shared/Ipless Ip
