Hire a sys admin or get your noc to do it.

Do it wrong and your system is unbootable.

Its quite easy. Use "up2date" via SSH. I use

    [#root] up2date -fu

If you have not registered your box with the RedHat network, it will prompt you to do so.

Anyway, up2date will upgrade many of the OS software components, including the kernel. I recently upgraded 6 of our web servers with up2date and it was simple, except I had to reinstall MD5 and DBD for MySQL because they somehow got corrupted on one of our servers during the process.

If you run up2date and it gives you an error message indicating it cannot be found, then you can install it from the RPM section of WHM.

Is there a way to find out what up2date will update prior to it doing it? If so can you set things not to upgrade?

Off to do some reading up?

up2date -l will show you what it's going to update.
up2date --configure will allow you to set things not to upgrade.

    Guys,

Excellent thread, it helped me a lot. I just registered the box with redhat network (i think demo). will i have to update every 3 months or something else ??? what is the next step ? can i register the RHN in all my servers ?

I ll try up2date -fu or up2date --nox -f kernel and see what's happening.

Thank you very much for helping me. You guys rock it.
    Thanks,
