Default Kernel Update on centos 3.6

I am trying to update kernel on centos 3.6 via yum and its stops saying this:-

Gathering header information file(s) from server(s)
    Server: CentOS-3 - Addons
    Server: CentOS-3 - Base
    Server: CentOS-3 - Extras
    Server: CentOS-3 - Updates
    Finding updated packages
    Downloading needed headers
    Resolving dependencies
    ....Unable to satisfy dependencies
Package squirrelmail needs php-mbstring, this is not available.

How to fix this any idea ?

    Many Thanks

    Default Kernel update

What command did you run? Squirelmail is not a requirement of a new kernel.

Just remove the squirrelmail rpm, it's not used by cPanel:

    rpm -e squirrelmail

    Then upgrade to CentOS v3.8:

    yum update

If you want to update your kernel, remember to remove kernel* from /etc/yum.conf exclude= line and then run yum update again.

Default Upgrading the house to fix the fridge?

He only wanted to upgrade the kernel. Now you have him removing SquirrelMail.

'yum update kernel' is the command to use.

Yes, because you should not be upgrading the kernel which was released in a later version of the OS into an old version of the OS.

Maybe but 3.8 is not really new release. 4.0 was the new release. 3.8 is a repackage with updates already applied. There is nothing that has changes between 3.6 and 3.8 which would prevent him from just upgrading the kernel.

No, v4 is effectively a different OS. It's always sensible to maintain the OS and to keep it up to date no matter what, and advising against it is silly. Anyway, you're your argument is specious at best and detracting fro the OP.

    <<rpm -e squirrelmail>> did the trick!

    THanks Chripy!

OS got updated to centos 3.8 and then kernel 2.4.21-47.EL got installed however on reboot it was still old kernel (Entries in /etc/grub.conf were correct)

If I wish to upgrade to centos 4.x - how should I do it? Fill in centos 4.x mirrors in yum.conf?

    Thanks

No. You could end up with an unbootable system. The recommended way (by CentOS) to go from 3 to 4 is to actually start again, i.e. backup data, wipe the OS, install v4 and then restore. You can upgrade from v3 to v4, but there are various pitfalls.

it can be done but I would not recomend it I have done it successfully twice and once it bombed and had to wipe data and start from scratch (they were not production serverss)
