kernel update - use up2date or RPM?

my server provider is saying that i shouldn't use up2date to update the kernel, as it has things in it that will conflict with cpanel, and that i should use RPM instead.

Can anyone give me any feedback about their thoughts or experiences with either of these on a cpanel server?

I assume RPM would be harder for me as a novice too. I have a tech who can do stuff if i have problems with an install, or if i really need help.

I have used both methods and haven't have a problem with either (the last 2 Kernel upgrades I used up2date).

Has anyone upgraded to this kernel-smp-2.4.20-19.7.i686.rpm who run RH 7.3? Did any issues arise? I just want to know if it is safe (I run a dual pentium machine).

Updated last nite with up2date and no problems at all. On a Dell Dual Xeon RH 7.3 Cpanel machine.

up2date is alot easier, and faster IMHO

Little Problem.... i went to do a up2date, and it took me to Red Hat and asked for my 16 digit number. my server provider says they don't have one.

How can i do an up2date without the special serial #?

Using the other response you see above, you can get a 'demo account' for upgrading purposes. I've only heard of a few problems with the up2date upgrades, and that was with multi-processor machines (dells that rackshack has in stock). So be careful.

I prefer to compile it myself - easier that way as you know what's going into it. Get a cheap local box and try it a few times - it's not that bad if you're already used to php, etc..

There are often problems updating the dual Xeons. There is a good How-to in another forum about updating the dual Xeons...

It is also possible that your provider is using a custom Kernel, and that could cause issues when using up2date. We've run into up2date issues at VO...all other servers are fine (except for the Dual Xeons)

I would like to use up2date --nox -f kernel. I know very little. I am in the process of registering with redhat and am unsure how to find out what rpm packages have been installed. Where do i go for this?

Better be careful upgrading dual cpu server, we at least tryed to use up2date on one and ended up with the server hanging and not beeing willing to boot. There was someone at the server so we just booted previus version kernel and all was ok.

I say get a teck gay to do it, and if possible have him compile a kernel for you.
