Kernel upgrade using up2date ????????

Hello,
I need help to upgrade my kernel... I used this guide but my server never booted again (http://www.eth0.us/rpm-kernel) . So now I don't wanna made the same mistake on this new server, some people told me that it can be updated using up2date removing the kernel from the skip list using "up2date --configure"... Have anyone tried this method ? What's the next step after the removing the kernel from the skip list ?

"up2date --force kernel" would be a good choice ?
or what are your suggestions to upgrade the kernel using up2date safety and easy as well ?

up2date -uf kernel kernel-smp kernel-utils kernel-docs kernel-source

the above is the command to update the kernel stuff. You should either choose kernel or kernel-smp depending on the number of CPUs you have (use kernel if single CPU w/ no HT, or kernel-smp with multiple CPUs or a single CPU w/ HT). You can also choose to update kernel-source and kernel-docs at your discretion. You only need to install them if you need to read the documentation or compile stuff from the kernel source, otherwise you should remove them if already installed.
