Default Lack of trailing slash doesnt redirect to directory

    Hi,
I have searched here and on google and am mystified:

http://www.domain.com redirects to http://www.domain.com/ (loading index.html/ as it should)
http://www.domain.com/folder/ also works as it should
http://www.domain.com/folder just hangs - no page loaded no error and no redirect

I have a server with WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.9.0-R57 on RHE3 and across all domains this has started happening within the last week or two. I'd be grateful for any help.
    Ben
