Default large number of OPTIONS requests

Main >> Server Status >> Apache Status display large number of lines like below
    Code:
    13-0 - 0/0/3 . 0.00 1514 0 0.0 0.00 0.01 127.0.0.1 [host] OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0
    14-0 - 0/0/3 . 0.00 1514 0 0.0 0.00 0.01 127.0.0.1 [host] OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0
    15-0 - 0/0/3 . 0.00 1514 0 0.0 0.00 0.01 127.0.0.1 [host] OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0
Eventually, when they reach to 150 or so Apache becomes unresponsive. OPTIONS method is blocked by a mod_security rule so I am thinking this is a request internal to CPanel/WHM. Any pointers?

Below is an (incomplete) capture of what I mean. Is anybody else seeing this? Where are those OPTIONS requests are coming from? Why do they persist?
