Logging Into Clients Accounts via FTP

Is there anyway to login to a client's account via FTP without having to ask them for their password? For example, if a client emails me and says their having problems with FTPing into their account, I'd like to be able to test it out without asking them what their login info is. I tried using the root password, but it doesn't work.

use your root password and the username that you want to use.

I know this works for cPanel, but are you sure it works for FTP? I just tried logging into my test account using my test account's login name and root's password and it said login incorrect.

Root Password doesn't work for FTP (to the best of my knowledge). In this case, you can either use a secure FTP and go into the /home directory or get a password from the client.

What do you mean by "use a secure FTP" ? Can you clarify for a newbie?

Ftp'ing to a clients site requires their password, or as Tom said, ftp'ing to root and going to their directory. Just remember, if anything new is uploaded to the clients site when ftp'ing as root, the file will have to be chowned to their username.

Thanks! I downloaded WinSCP, as suggested by another user, and was able to get to all directories via secure FTP, which is exactly what I wanted to do.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out (yet) how to change the owner of any files in WinSCP.

I'm not sure if you can with it. I know SecureFX doesn't have that ability. You need SSH to do that.

Vandyke also has SecureCRT, or there is also a free secure SSH program called Putty.
