Hi all,
I need some clarification on logs. I still have so much to learn about administrating a server. I wish my data center had totally managed servers, but maybe someday. One of my areas that needs clarifying is how large are large logs.
I noticed my CPU spiking over 5 during backup the past couple of mornings. I have found that this will often happen when the domlogs for a particular domain get rather large. I have no problem resetting the domlogs as needed, but I need clarification on a few others.
Here are a few of the logs that have grow. I don't know which are safe to clear out.
/var/log secure.tntgibson.com 105,036,158
/var/log exim_maillog.1.gz 4,398,870
/var/log lastlog 19,136,220
/var/log chkservd.log 8,222,437
/usr/local/apache/logs ssl_engine_log 10,236,012
/usr/local/apache/logs suexe_log 3,045,947
I cleared out the access_log and error_log. I used the command:
cp /dev/null error_log
Any other tips on logs or general server maintenance is greatly appreciated.
