mail problems ... username used to work now user@domain work

if we created some mail users we could use \"username\" as the login with the mail server mail.domain.com but all of a sudden about 24 hours ago it stoped working, now it works with username@domain.com as the login only ??

the server this happend is a rh 6.2, and it only happend on one server.. the others are fine ?
