Mail queue how does email get there?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but can anyone tell me what are the different reasons that an emil would wind up in the mail queue?

i think a few

one is if someoneis over their wuota it will sit on the queue till they free up some space

My mail queue is flooded with e-mails that people send to my server and when my server bounces them back, the e-mail it send's them to doesnt exist. so they just come back and sit in my mail queue.

It depends on how you have exim configured on your server. It can be for quota violations, unknown users, inability to complete host lookup and/or verify sender.If you search the forum you can find out how to reduce the number of emails in your que signifcantly. Make the server reject emails that are unrouteable (sent to unknown users), over quota, and unable to verify sender or if it fails host lookup.
