Default Memory Usage Always 80% Above

The memory usage on one of our servers is always 80% or above. There is a process that is always running that seems to be using a large portion of the memory:

    4901 root 10 20 323M 25600K nanslp 93:25 0.00% 0.00% perl5.8.4

The process seems to be idle, yet using large amounts of resources. Has anyone got an ideas how to reduce memory usage? Thanks

Well, you really need to find out what the process is. One way would be to use:

    lsof | grep 4901

If it's not actually doing anything (i.e. processing logs) then it's probably been poorly written with respect to memory management. A restart should free up the memory (it restarts with a cpanel restart).

Newbie Alert!!! What command did you use to help you find out the culprit that was causing the high memory usage?

    Two ways:

    1. Use the top command and then sort by memory usage by hitting M

    2. Use the following ps command:

    ps axfv
