    Default mrtg.cfg eating up resources

Can anybody tell me what the below is and why it's using so much cpu resources?

    root 3.28 3.21 2.0
    Top Process %CPU 39.5 /usr/bin/perl /scripts/realperlinstaller Net::AIM Net::SSLeay Archive::Tar Tree::MultiNode Tie::IxHash HTML::Entities Bundle:BD::mysql CGI MD5 Digest::MD5 Mail::SpamAssassin Net:NS Bundle::Interchange
    Top Process %CPU 32.0 /usr/bin/perl /usr/bin/mrtg /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg
    Top Process %CPU 23.0 /usr/bin/perl /usr/bin/mrtg /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg

    Thanks!

We remove mrtg on almost all servers, we do it like this:

    rpm -e mrtg

    it's a resource hog.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed (since uninstalling):

    1) System performance increase?

    2) Loss of any kind of functionality (stats or something)?

    3) Anyhting else worth commenting on?

    TY

Not one customer has pointed it out and nothing has stopped working that we use.

I can't say I have noticed a performance increased but anything that chews up 10% pieces of cpu through the day will slow down other services.

I have seen mrtg hit 30-40% averages on busy servers.

I say unless your are running a managed switch mrtg on the server then disable it. It's not worth your customers seeing mrtg for the system resource use.

    Just my 2 cents..

Thanks a lot for the comments. People may also find this interesting http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/
    especially the part about configuration.
