    Default MySQL Blank Root Password

    This is a bit odd.

I have a customer who is attempting to setup his root user with a blank mysql password. This is stupid I know, and I've recommended he create a new user with privileges only for the necessary database.

However while investigating his claims I saw some unusual behavior.

For example setting the root password in the mysql client to blank works fine. But if you restart the mysqld the password is reset to an automatically generated password. /root/.my.cnf is even updated to reflect the new password.

I'm restarting the service through the WHM so I'm not sure how the password is being reset.

Anyone experience this in the past?
