mysql sock error - don't see this specifically in other threads

Brand n ew server, transitioning data from old server, get this when copying multiple accounts:

DBI connect('mysql:localhost','root',...) failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/Mysql.pm line 40 Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/Mysql.pm line 502.

hmm ok I think it was because I'd forgotten to set a mysql root pw... testing now, we'll see.

ok, I THINK that solved that, but I'm having other problems. sigh. Trying to log into FTP via the IP (since DNS hasn't updated yet), and it's refusing connections.
