New index.html page on base server name

Anyone else notice that cPanel pushed out a new index.html file to the website for the base server name about 4 days ago?

We had custom pages on every server and they simply went and overwrote them! Thanks for nothing but giving us more work to do restoring them. You could have checked to see if there was already an index.html page and not overwritten it if it existed! Now we have to go recreate them for about 30 servers; this time we'll make sure we set the immutable bit. What a bone-headed move you made; who's bright idea was this one?!!?

Yep! Same thing here. PLUS!!! Where do they get off advertising themselves on there as well.

What a bunch of aholes for this one.

We use cpanel to manage clients not for allowing them to rewrite index pages and give themselves free advertising space.

I was a bit annoyed about this too.
I had scripts embedded in the default apache installation page for monitoring purposes.
Ah well, replaced it again now, and made a backup just incase.

Thanks for the warning. I haven't upgraded cpanel for a while but should soon. I'll be ready to replace mine.

Guess I'll be creating a custom page as well, as I don't mind the old page but the new one.. well, I don't really like advertising too much unless I get a cut of the sales..

Not a big deal though - like someone else said, just change it and make it immutable.

I have heard one person say they made theirs immutable and it got overwritten anyway. Apparently, the update script runs a chattr -i on the file before writing it. At least, that is what I have heard. I don't know, since my host names do not point to the /usr/local/apache/htdocs driectory. I have never had my index file overwritten, because it is in a /hjome/username/www directory. I just edit the httpd.conf file manualy to point the hostname whereever I want.

Even though this issue does not affect me, I do find it disturbing. I also find it interesting that Nick has posted to other threads on the board while this one is here, but has chosen not to deal with this thread.

That's because the other threads don't show that they screwed up, also the fact he could not provide any sort of answer that would satisfy any of us.

I am also po'd at the fact the script did not at least make a backup. That in itself is totally unacceptable and just bad practice.

Yours is the best idea. I do this also. If you do this, and as long as httpd.conf is not overwritten by Cpanel....... then this issue is moot.

I just wrote a cron job that runs 30 minutes after my upcp runs that replaces all my files in the htdocs folder.

Granted, that does make it moot too a point. I think though the bigger issue is the fact it was done without warning, without backing up the file, nothing. That alone should cause some concern as this could have been any file anywhere on anyones server. It also very bad programming to do things like this without making backups of some sort of existing files. That's the bigger issue for me.

Can someone point to me to the default location of the file to alter.
