Has anything ever been stable for that matter? Change is the only constant.

STABLE is a bit of a misnomer. Maybe it should be renamed "conservative" or following the more standard development cycle approach approach, call it FINAL, i.e. where it's the final release of a build tree. Then people won't get all uppity when they find that STABLE has bugs in it and don't understand that that is inevitable.
