Optimizing /etc/my.cnf

How do you suggest to optimize /etc/my.cnf ?
(values below are only an example)

set-variable = max_connections=500
set-variable = join_buffer=4M
set-variable = record_buffer=1M
set-variable = table_cache=1024
set-variable = key_buffer=16M

suppose to have a system with 1 GB ram , and 512MB Swap
