password protect manager wont delete

Hi,
this is prob a simple question, but every time i try and untick or remove the protection of a fold, it keeps coming back and wont actually delete the protection.
the only way i seem to be able to do it is by removing the 'auth' line from the hta and the password file in the htapasswords at root level.

help?

using cpanel 11.xx
