password protected dirs ask for password several times

Dear Forum..

i have some password protected dirs on my domain, but when i ask people to log into them, the system asks for the password lots of times.

i have checked, the information being entered is correct first time, it just repeats the dialog asking for the login and password several times. Sometimes it wont let people in period. i have double triple checked the details and i have also cut and pasted from an email i sent, tried it on 3 or 4 computers, some login, some dont, some ask for password more than once.

any ideas? anything i need to look out for? could this be a host server issue rather than a cpanel issue? or is there an issue i need to be aware of?

This usually happens when you have multiple entries in the .htaccess or multiple .htaccess files with the password protection. Check the contents of them and make sure there is only one.

had a quick look at the .htacess file that is sat in my dir, what am i looking for?

it was set using cpanel and not written in by hand. does that make a difference

actually i have just found the passwd file. this obviously contains the scrambled password, but if i have my dir structure:

www.domain.com/firstdir/seconddir

and i have a passwd file in the www.domain.com/firstdir/ and the www.domain.com/seconddir/, would this mean i have to enter the login details i set twice?

i hope that made sense...

Directory only should ask for the password which you have set up as a password protect directory.

If you are linking to images or files from one of those directories in the other, that might be causing the problem.

To test, remove the pass protection on one of the directories. Does it ask for the password twice, still?

Exclamation

If you have any mod_rewrite or internal virtualhost redirection,
you will be asked the authorization for each redirection.

If you call the login from within an iframe, you will also be
prompted multiple times to login typically.
