Password protected dirs: can login with passwords similar to the one set!

One of my users today discovered he can login to his password protected directory with any password starting with the first 8 characters of his set password.

Does this mean that setting a password of more than 8 characters does not increase protection?

Anyone else seen this before?

PWSowner is on a distinguished road
The first 8 characters is all that counts.
