Default password protected sub-dir, but root dir prompt for password

hi there, i tried from cpanle to setup password protection for one sub directory, which is working, when entering the sub-dir, like http://example.com/abc/cde/, it prompts for login.

but the problem is when entering the site, like http://example.com, it also pops up and prompts for username/password.

i have tried to remove fp extensions and restarted apache, but that didn't help.

i checked the root dir, it has a blank .htaccess, zero byte.

what could go wrong. pls advise. thanks for your help.

    Hi phytonet,

I hope this problem due to .htaccess file.
Run this command on the home directory of the domain example.com

    find /home/example | grep .htaccess

After run this command you will get some .htaccess file. If you get a .htaccess file in the images directory (or, similar directory) remove it.

    eg: /home/example/public_html/images/.htaccess

May be it will help to solve your problem.

also... if you password protected a subfolder, and you try to load a page from an area that is not password protected that refers to a file in the protected folder, you will get the message.

Make sure that the page you are trying to load does not reference any images or files in the password procted folder.
