Password Protection Problem

A client of mine is using the password protect directories features. He tries to view the directory and get the follownig error:

403 Forbidden

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /pictures/index.html on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I attempted to:

/scripts/updatenow

should fix it for new accounts

Then run

/scripts/enablefileprotect

to fix all the current accounts.

And this still does not help. I also rebuilt apache and am still recieving the same error. Any ideas as to what I can do to fix the password protected error?

i assume that it uses an .htaccess file.

connect via FTP or SSH and remove or rename the .htaccess file and you will have access again.

If there is no .htaccess file, then this error may be due to Directory listing turned off in conf.

make a .htaccess file there and add the line

Options +Indexes
