    Default Pop3 didn't authenticate

    Hi Anyone

I just got a new server and this is a fresh install.

I made an account and an email account. Tried to log in from Entourage (mac) and Outlook express (pc) and I can't connect. Webmail runs like a charm.

This is the error I get in var/log/messages

    Aug 1 02:50:49 138230 popa3d[384]: Didn't attempt authentication
    Aug 1 02:54:42 138230 popa3d(pam_unix)[1216]: check pass; user unknown
    Aug 1 02:54:42 138230 popa3d(pam_unix)[1216]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost=
    Aug 1 02:54:45 138230 popa3d[1216]: Authentication failed for UNKNOWN USER from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldent the server work when "fresh" out of the box??

    Regards
    Musmand

You're running the wrong pop3 daemon. You need to disable whatever that one is (probably in xinetd - /etc/xinetd.d/) and then restart cppop: /scripts/restartsrv_cppop

The problem is still as I have said, you're running an incorrect POP3 daemon which you need to shutdown first.

As chirpy is saying, disable this in your xinetd:

    root@server [~]# vim /etc/xinetd.d/popa3d

Change disable = no to disable = yes and save file.

    root@server [~]# service xinetd restart
    root@server [~]# /scripts/restartsrv_cppop
