postgresql has failed

Hello,

I have read many other threads on a similar topic to this but none of them have helped.

A few days ago I started receiving the following email notification every 10 minutes:
"postgresql failed @ Wed Oct 13 16:42:56 2004. A restart was attempted automagicly."

When I try to restart postgresql manually using WHM 9.9.0 I get the following error message:
"postgresql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "postmaster is not running"). "

The contents of my /etc/chkserv.d are:
service[postgresql]=x,x,x,/scripts/restartsrv postgresql,postmaster,pgsql|postgres|root

I have read somewhere that I might be able to solve the problem by finding the 'postmaster.pid' file somewhere in a postgres data directory and delete it.

The only problem is that I can't even find where postgress is installed - I've searched all partitions for 'postgresql', 'postgres', and 'pgsql' but all I can find are the docs and install files but not the actual installation.

Can someone please tell me where I might find the installation of postgress, or tell me another solution to the problem.

What do you want to do? Uninstall it to make the message go away or fix it to make the message go away? Either way, the answer is here on the forums.

What I want to do is fix postgresql so that it works properly and makes the message go away.

I spent several hours searching through the forums here and I have not found the answer - please point me in the right direction if you can.

Type this line from your original post into a search and spend a few minutes more :

postgresql has failed please contact the sysadmin



You can leave out 'has', 'please' and 'the' if you would like. cPanel search sees those as noise words.

With your help I did find a new thread that I hadn't previously read, and now I'm starting to suspect that Postgres is not installed.

For example when I look where I think it should be this is what happens:

ls -l /var/lib/pgsql
/var/lib/pgsql: No such file or directory

In fact I have nothing in /var/lib/ that looks like postgres.

Can anyone please tell me if this means it's not installed, or let me know a definitive way to find out if it is or not?

/scripts/reinstallpostgres

expect to loose any db's if you had any to begin with. ... you may have already lost them.. I dont know.

Or, if you don't want pgsql at all, just uncheck it from the service manager and run

service chkservd restart

from the command line.

Thank you for the follow-ups, but I'm still not sure if postgres is actaully installed.

If it is, I'll fix it. If it isn't then I'll remove it from the service manager.

Can someone please tell me how to confirm whether or not Postgres is installed?

If there are no folders on your server entitled pgsql then it is not installed.

I do have some pgsql directories but they are either empty or seem to include only source files - the directories are:

/usr/lib/pgsql <- one subdir but no files
/usr/include/pgsql <- seems to include only source files
/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/interchange/foundation/dbconf/pgsql/ <- seems to include only Cpanel config files.

Does this mean postgres is not installed?

I'm having this same problem, but I have no /scripts/reinstallpostgres. I do have a /scripts/installpostgres but that prouduces errors and does not finish successfully. Should I uninstall postgre then run it? If so how to uninstall?
