problem reading large mail folder

i have a client which has a "Trash" mbox file of the size 280mb total around 500+ messages in there.

the problem is when trying to open the "Trash" folder through an IMAP client like squirrelmail the IMAP server simply times-out without being able to read the folder.

i am guessing this is happening because the file is quite large and it cant be processed fast enough? are there any solutions to this problem?

also, this really brings up the question of why does cpanel switch to Maildir? which would eliminate problems such as this all together...

The only solution is to empty or delete the trash folder file since your server doesn't have the resources available to process it. Email on a server really should be a transient thing where users download it into their local environment. If they want to use it as a storage medium, they should invest in a Mail Server for the task, not use a general purpose web server.

As for the mail storage under IMAP, you'd have to address that to cPanel in a bugzilla enhancement request (if one doesn't already exist).
