    Default Proftpd Max Clients Problem

    I have anonymous ftp turned of on my server. Users that are logging in are getting the message that a maximum of 3 clients can connect at once (when more than 3 try to login). How can I up the limit? The proftpd looks like it can limit the anonymous logins, but I didn't see anything for users. Any suggestions?

    You can try this. Open /etc/proftpd.conf. Locate

    Code:
    # A basic anonymous configuration, no upload directories.
    <Anonymous ~ftp>
    <Limit LOGIN>
    DenyAll
    </Limit>
    UseFtpUsers on
    RequireValidShell off

      User                          ftp
      Group                         ftp
      # We want clients to be able to login with "anonymous" as well as "ftp"
      UserAlias                     anonymous ftp

      <Limit LOGIN>
        AllowAll
      </Limit>
      # Limit the maximum number of anonymous logins
      MaxClients                    10

      # We want 'welcome.msg' displayed at login, and '.message' displayed
      # in each newly chdired directory.
      DisplayLogin                  welcome.msg
      DisplayFirstChdir             .message

      # Limit WRITE everywhere in the anonymous chroot
      <Limit WRITE>
        DenyAll
      </Limit>

    </Anonymous>
    Look at the maxclients, increase it. This should work for you.

    The max clients is set at 10, but the problem is when someone logs into a non-anonymous account they are getting limited to 3 connections per domain.

    Thanks for the reply though.

    Open the same file. Locate the entry for your domain in question. Locate this line inside that entry:
    Code:
             MaxClients 3 "Sorry, this ftp server has reached its maximum user count (%m). Please try again later"
    Hope you find your solution this time.

    My proftpd.conf file looks very basic. There are no domain entries located in the file.

    Are you doing shared ip hosting ? I think the domains are listed in the proftpd.conf only if you have a dedicated ip assigned to the domain. I tried to find information for shared, but was unable to. Will keep in mind, once i get the info, will post here.

    Sorry.

    I am receiving this same issue with one of my customers. I increased the max limit to 10 and he still recieves the error after some file transfers. Intially he was using cuteftp. I had him try smartftp. I wait till his connections time out which I verify, then have him try it again. Immediately his connections shoot up to 7+ then he exceeds 10.

    Any ideas?

    Has anyone found a solution to this? I tried modifying the config file for proftpd to set the max users to 10 and restarting it, and am still running into the same problem:

    530 Sorry, this ftp server has reached its maximum user count (3). Please try again later

    We're seeing this now as well for users on unique IPs. They have gone in and ensured there are no active sessions using the Session Management feature in cPanel, yet they still get the error. Sounds like a bug somewhere (if they have no active sessions, how are they using all of them?!?!)

    open the /etc/proftpd.conf and add the following directive to the configuration file :

    MaxInstances 10

    restart your proftpd service and have a try.
    Best Regards,
