Quick question about where to configure apache?

My friend decided to move from a $10/month shared server to a $120/month dedicated server.

I am trying to help him migrate his Drupal/Gallery2/PHPBB2 webstie....

Only I don't know how to setup Apache via WHM or cPanel or whatever.

I have only setup test servers under windows & used shared sever not WHM cPanel & Red Hat 5.

So 1) Whats the proper way of editing the http.conf file? I am guessing its via WHM or cPanel rather than just editing the file with a text editor.

I know how to build apache and php, just not how to change the .ini and .conf once I am done.

2) This is less important but if anyone knows the best version of apache to run for Drupal/Gallery2/phpBB2 I wouldn't mind knowing. 1.3, 2.0, 2.2?

Anyway I don't need help with the settings just need to know the *proper* way to access them.

You would first start by creating their account in whm
WHM > Account functions > Create a new account

That should get you started fine. Once created, the web files will be placed in /home/user/public_html

Some typical locations for files since you are new to cpanel which vary quite a bit over a traditional linux install:

/usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.con
/usr/local/lib/php.ini (with or without zend you will still find the symlink there)
/var/lib/mysql

Thanks, I had already created the accounts.

I didn't know the location of those files on linux, or if it was safe to manually edit them.
I assumed that either WHM or cpanel gave GUI access to those configuration files, and manual edits might conflict with that.
I edit them manually on my windows server so going in via SSH and editing them manually (using pico?) isn't going to be a problem.

Manual edits are fine and probably preferred especially for php. Last I recall, the php editor in whm may cause issues when saving. This was a while back but still, I would recommend manual edit for php.ini and httpd.conf. For exim.conf, yes you will definitely need to use whm or changes will be overwritten from manual edits.

Manual updates to httpd.conf are not recommended in newer versions of cPanel. With the new EasyApache system, your ahcnges may get overwritten. You should use the Apache Setup area in WHM to modify httpd.conf. You can also see: http://www.cpanel.net/support/docs/ea/ea3/ for more information on EasyApache 3

Yeah I discovered that I can add stuff via cpanel that gets appended to the httpd.conf file.

But finding and manually editing the http.conf let me get things working until I figured that out.

Anyway thanks everyone for the help.

I have an entire book on WHM/cPanel and when I run out of things that needed done yesterday I will sit down and read it, and the book on Apache, and Red Hat, ....
