Quick Security Scan

When I click on \"Quick Security Scan\" under SECURITY section of WebHost Manager I get messages in result frame as follows:

Stopping portmapper: [FAILED]
or
Shutting Down xfs: [FAILED]

All of the things it is stopping [FAILED] and all of the thing it is shutting down [FAILED] and then it stops...

I have no idea if this is actually doing any scanning or not as I have never seen anything on the result page other than the stopping and/or shutting down errors.

What\'s supposed to be happening??

I just took that to mean it wasn\'t running so the script failed to stop it.

Yea I kinda figured that those things that it as trying to stop weren\'t running in the first place too, but that all that happens. You get these error messages and that\'s it.

Seems like there should be some message saying didn\'t find any problems or something to let you know it did at least do something with the scan, other than stop non-running services (^_^)...

yes, I agree completely... I was kinda concerned about it... but... not concerned enough to be too worried, if that makes sense... I guess my apathy took over.

Thanks exactly the way I looked at it. Not that important a function anyway, at least compared to the other major problems I\'m currently having anyway javascript:icon(\'\')

I believe by \"failed\", it means it could not complete the action (like stopping your services), which is a good thing. If it didn\'t fail, you\'d be insecure..

It DOES mean that it failed to stop, as it is running the scripts in /etc/init.d (or /etc/rc.d/init.d with Redhat 6).

These scripts will report [FAILED] if it fails to stop the service.

I believe Cpanel just searches for services in the default runlevel\'s script\'s directory (rc3.d on default Redhat installs) which has links to the files in init.d. If it finds any scripts in there that contain the words, \"portmap\", \"xfs\", etc.. it will try to stop them by running that script with the \'stop\' command.

To be safe, it would be best to delete those startup scripts which aren\'t required via the shell.. just be careful not to delete the necessary ones!
