    Default retry timeout exceeded

A few of my clients have reported "retry timeout exceeded" errors when sending mail to certain hosts.

They will send the email and they will get this message returned to them:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    email@email.com
    retry timeout exceeded
Any idea how to fix this issue?

Check the email log for more details.

    /var/log/exim_mainlog

Might be the mailbox is full or disk space is full or the wrong permissions or sometimes spam filters may be blocking the mails.

In the log there is a whole bunch of them from different domains that say connection refused.

Do you have a firewall installed? If yes then make sure port 25 is not blocked.

Flush the iptables and then try.

    iptables -F

    refer this topic.

Over the past month I have still be getting a lot of these "retry timeout exceeded" errors, on domains where there shouldn't be a problem like Lockheed Martin for example.

I don't think there is a firewall installed, how can I check that?

I tried the iptables -F, not sure if it did anything, it didn't tell me anything at the command prompt.
