Running your own nameservers/DNS, simple question, I hope.

If you are running your own DNS, you have registered a domain, eg.:

domain.com

...and then registered the name server addresses so your hosted customers can use for their domains. Let's say you have these name servers that are registered:

ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

But here's the question - Do you need to keep that domain (domain.com) registered? In other words, if the domain expires, will the name server addresses that are based on that domain, also go out of business?

Yes, you need to keep domain.com registered. As your customers are only typing ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com into their domain registrar (not the IP addresses of those servers), the domain is the only method by which the proper nameservers for your clients' domains can be found.

Or to put it in a different way: imagine the mess that would be created if domain.com had been owned by 5 different people in 5 years and all were allowed to keep running their own ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. Only the current owner of domain.com can run ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as far as the rest of the internet (outside of your server/network) is concerned.
