    Question SIM keeps restarting XINETD

I use http://rfxnetworks.com/sim.php on my cpanel server and it all worked fine until the last week where each morning 6am GMT I get a status warning telling me that XINET was down and that it had to restart it.

Has something changed? Is there now something weird about XINETD.

My cpanel is stable and set to automatically update.

    EDIT:

In fact it looks like something ALWAYS shuts it down and then SIM restarts it looking at a section of messages:-

Jul 2 05:57:02 tkey-29dd xinetd: xinetd shutdown succeeded
Jul 2 06:00:01 tkey-29dd xinetd: xinetd shutdown failed
Jul 2 06:00:01 tkey-29dd xinetd: xinetd startup succeeded

What is causing my server to shutdown xinetd in the first place?

You shouldn't really use SIM on a cPanel servers as the cPanel chkservd process takes care of restarting failed services. If you do use it, make sure it isn't checking any of the processes that chkservd does otherwise you can end up with race-conditions which I've seen many times with SIM.

Thank you very much for your reply.

How can I find out which services chkservd keeps a check on? I assume that one of them would be xinetd!

The reason I installed SIM was because one day I noticed apache was down and cpanel had not brought it back up so to speak.

Rule of thumb is that if it is listed in the Service Status section of WHM (WHM -> Server Status -> Service Status) then it is monitored by chkservd and anything not listed there is not monitored by chkservd.

I've just checked and it shows simply:-

cpsrvd (presumably the cpanel server itself)
    named (name server)

and then memory usage, server load and disk usage, but nothing else!

So xinetd, apache, mysql, etc. etc. is not monitored by chkservd?

In fact the only overlap between SIM and chkservd I can see is checking that named is up and running.

I can't see how this explains my original query, i.e. why all of a sudden something (cpanel?) is shutting down xinetd at 5:57 GMT every morning and 3 minutes later SIM notices this and restarts it.

Apache, Exim and several other services (but not xinetd) should be monitored. I recommend submitting a support ticket: http://tickets.cpanel.net/submit

xinetd is killed by /scripts/disable_unused_xinetd which is ran during upcp.

There is a fix for this due out in next Builds that will check if xinetd is running and not kill it if any sockets are open.

You can add a restart to /scripts/postupcp in the meantime until this is fixed.

Thank you very much Kevin for your help in this matter, just the ticket!
