    Default a simple question

I want to ask a very simple question since i can not find the answer. What's the difference with/without "www". Sometimes when you type the address of website(i.e.http://test.com) with/without www, you will get different results. Many thanks in advance.

    Actually thats a good question.

Most people setup both www.domain.tld and domain.tld to point to the same web site, why i really don't know except thats the way it always has been.

we have in past ran seperate domain.tld and www.domain.tld due to the fact the customer was dead set on asp support but liked the cpanel to manage e-mail and webmail.

so we put the www.domain.tld to ip 1.2.3.4 on a windows box for asp support

and we put domain.tld to ip 1.2.3.5 which is a cpanel box that way they get the best of both worlds.

main thing that differentiates if they are seperate or the same is the DNS settings and the httpd.conf

you could have a httpd.conf for domain.tld linked to /home/user/website and if you want different content for the www.domain.tld you would like it to /home/user/website1 in the httpd.conf

not for sure if this answers your question or not. If not I will be glad to try to answer any questions you have

One final note: In the linux world there is usually a hundred different ways to do something and all 100 of them be the correct way to do it. The www.domain and domain being seperate or the same is one of those deals. Its not right or wrong either way just depends on your needs which way you do it.
