slow SSH & FTP login

loggin into SSH & FTP is very slow... there is a pretty bad lag. Once logged in its is fine, but I'd like to get rid of the lag.

With FTP, ftping to the main server hostname or ftp domain names is very fast loggin in, however trying to log in via IP is very slow.

SSH is slow logging in with either the hostname or IP.

reverse DNS is not setup for the server (waiting for datacenter to do it), so maybe that is why IPs take so long with FTP, but doesn't really explain why SSH takes so long with the hostname.

and update: this appears an OS X problem. My windows users have no delay logging in with the IP.
