Default [smartcheck] Hard Drive Failure Soon

I've received three of these in my inbox to date: RackShack has tested my system and found no problems. Any ideas?

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
You should backup all the data on the hard drives listed below and replace them as soon as possible.

My server had this problem before, some staff told me that sometimes cpanel did send this email though the HDD works fine. But after a week, another staff told me that my HDD really had serious problem and had to be replaced urgently. So, I suggest you really got some experienced staff to check your HDD and don't ignore this message. This HDD must have some problems I believe.

If the error counts don't go up, it's highly likely that there's no problem. You can get these errors if:

    1. The smartd simply doesn't work well with the HDD (e.g. some seagate drives)

    2. You have smartd enabled drives, but smartd is disabled in the BIOS

    3. You really do have a faulty drive - in that case the error counts should rise and you should then seek a replacement. For the other 2 above, you can simply ignore it.

    From the FAQ :

How can I disable the SMART errors?

Run the following from a command line:

    touch /var/cpanel/disablesmartcheck
    /scripts/updatenow

You should only make that change if you are confident that the errors are erroneous (due to an incompatible drive, etc as chirpy described) and are tired of seeing the error messages.

xphost what are you trying to check your hard drive for? If I knew that, I could do a better job of telling you how to check it. After all, if you are checking it for dust then I would suggest you take it out of the machine and blow on it

There was a thread around here someplace (and I believe a feature request) urging cpanel to update to a newer more compatible smartd service. Hopefully they will listen (a few more requests from different people couldn't hurt ).

Here is the thread I was referring to earlier, and here is the bugzilla entry referenced in that thread.

Here is the site with the updated packages.

Interestingly, I just compiled and ran the latest version against a drive that was bitching about problems on a cPanel server and although the SMART log contained old errors, it passed the self-test without problems. So, the version cPanel is using can definitely show up false positives.

Btw, don't upgrade the cPanel version - the latest version is not backwards compatible due to changes in command line arguments.

I am sure that 90+% of the smartcheck errors people come here looking for answers about could be eliminated if cpanel incorporated the updated package.

I do not think it would be that involved, but what do I know.

Hard drive fail. That is all the more reason why cPanel should incorporate the improved package instead of posting a FAQ article on how to disable the deficient one.
