    Default SPF records

    Hi,
I know that we have plenty of topcis regarding sending email to hotmail. And plenty of suggestions that we should have SPF record in order for hotmail to accept incoming email.

    However,
I really dont know what that SPF record will do. Is it something like PTR record for IP?

    thanks!!!

An SPF record, properly configured, will tell remote mail systems (who know what to do with SPF records) exactly what hosts ARE allowed to be sending mail from your domain.

An SPF record, even if it is not a strict SPF record, is better than no SPF record.

    Check out http://spf.pobox.com

For instance, if your company runs mail servers inside their organization and emails are only sent by company users using the company mail server, you can specify in the SPF record that mail server which is authorized to send out your domain mail and you can specify in the SPF record that it is the ONLY mail server authorized to do so.

So then when a remote mail system receives a piece of email from your domain, it checks to see if the IP address of the sending server matches the one(s) you have listed in your SPF. If it does, SPF passes. If it doesn't match, then SPF fails. When the SPF test fails, mail systems may reject the mail, may accept the mail but score it negatively.

That's just a brief overview. Check out the site mentioned above.

DNS Functions >> Edit DNS Zone

Domain - TTL - Record Type
    domain.com. - 14400 - TXT - "v=spf1 a mx ptr ip4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ip4:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ~all"
