Default Is there docs on the new back ups tools, any major risks with restoring?

Just trying to understand these options better:

EXPERIMENTAL: Use Hard Links for weekly and yearly backups to reduce disk usage and backup time.
EXPERIMENTAL: Enable use of optimized account backup tool.

mainly I can see they make it better but is there any additional risks to activating these? We rsync our backups to a second server after the back up completes locally if that might be a factor.

    Hello DWHS.net

I've answered this question on the optimized account backup tool previously at this location:

    new option in backup

The hard link option will reduce disk usage and backup times, since it's a hard link for weekly and monthly to daily when the file is the same. This means specifically that all files without changes share the same inode number and are hard linked to the path /pathtobackup/daily/pathtofile

For more details, it is basically the same as adding --link-desk to an rsync. The details for the hard link were taken from internal case #40069 where this feature was discussed and implemented.

    Thanks.

You are very welcome, and no worries. The hard link part wasn't mentioned previously anyway, so that's new information from what was on the forum that I could find.

Tristan, I noticed in WHM that it says "Use Hard Links for weekly and yearly backups to reduce disk usage and backup time."

Shouldn't this say "weekly and monthly backups..." ?

    Hi Scott,

Yes, it should say that because there are not yearly backups and that has already been noticed in a case (#46071), which has now gone through Quality Assurance to be ported back to 11.28 in a future release. The new text says specifically:

EXPERIMENTAL: Use Hard Links for weekly and monthly backups to reduce disk usage and backup time. (incremental backups only)
You are welcome to review the changelog at Change Logs for 11.28 to see when that case is pushed into production.

    Thanks.

Thanks, Tristan! I miss the Bugzilla days, where we could search bugs and see the status, so we didn't have to ask about things that were already being dealt with. :-)

Case 46071 was resolved in the early builds of 11.30. To see if 11.30 has reached your update tier, visit Downloads - cPanel Inc.

This is great news, David! Really looking forward to enabling hardlinked backups again. Just waiting for 11.30 to make its way to Stable.
