Default Transfer of Site from Plesk host

    to forum

again i may be in the wrong area here, and yes i probably know the wrong forum site but i wonderdd if anyone could help or point me to help?

i have downloaded a site fro ma plesk controled site to my apache server site [they are the correct terms i believe]. after sorting out the folder structure i think i now have the right folder structure on my server, everything in root rather than in a httpdocs folder on the plesk server, but i now get a plesk control panel hold page when i go to my site via server/[username] to check the site while DNS doesnt point to me server

why is this? have a copied over something which points to this and can i easily delete?

i have editted the host file on my laptop to point to my server ip so when i type the domain on my laptop it goes straight into the site and looks fine

    confused?

Which server IP, the cPanel/WHM server or the old Plesk server?

It's hard to say, but this could just be a DNS propagation issue (since you're seeing a Plesk-generated page). DNS propagation used to take 48 hours but seems to be much faster nowadays.

my server IP, which isnt pointed at by DNS. to check the site before i repoint to my server. DNS isnt a issue yet

when i type the domain from my laptop, with the edited hosts file, it goes straight to the domain and goes to index.php which is great. i do this via server name/~[username] so 1.2.3.4/~[username of client on cpanel] and it should do same but it goes to plesk holding page. it seems to be defaulting to index.html which when i open is thesame page. i think the question might be how do i default it to index.php?

It is very abnormal for a cPanel server to generate a Plesk holding page. I recommend you let someone login to your server and diagnose that.

The "httpdocs" folder on Plesk is the "public_html" folder on Cpanel.

Incidentally, I don't know if you realize this but Cpanel has a site transfer tool that can directly import your site from a Plesk server
that either you or your hosting provider can use depending on whether you are a server owner or shared hosting user respectively.

I'd volunteer for that. I have very strong background experience with both systems so if this user has something mixed up, I can sort it out very quickly.

That given though, it does sound very much like this is just simple normal propagation / IP resolution issues.

The user says they have not updated the DNS yet but admits to editing their hosts file so it is possible that may have botched that up or it not working in their computer for some reason.

I should be able to tell what's going on quickly in any case.

The free migration assistance is only for those with root access to both the Plesk and cPanel/WHM servers. However, this assistance is offered regardless of where you have acquired your cPanel license.
