two strange issues

Issue #1

I have cpanel on my centos box. By default cpanel has a cron at 1am. I added a 2nd one to make it run twice a day.

0 1 * * * /scripts/cpbackup
0 12 * * * /scripts/cpbackup

Problem is the 2nd one just wont' run at all. I restarted cron many times. Can't understand why it won't run.

Issue #2

As many times as I have restarted syslog, /var/log/messages remains empty always.
messages1 also empty but messages2 updated today. Strange part even messages shows updated today yet 0 bytes. Permissions on all of these are read/write

Any help appreciated.

I was able to duplicate this on a like second server also

That's because the backup script is written to only run once/day.

The backup script used to work twice a day before I had an OS reload.

Try setting the cron as below however I am not sure will you be able to run twice a day

0 */12 * * * /scripts/cpbackup
(dont forget to remove the other one)

That should do it. What the script does is check to see if the current backup is more than .5 days old. If not, it won't run.
