Post Unable to create email for www.-.extension?

    Hi:

Is it possible to create email adresses and mailboxes for a website that's been registered as
    www.-.md ?

A customer asked our support team that saying that CPanel doesnt offer support for that particular domain name in regards to creating emails.

Is it true? If yes, is there anyway to bypass it ?

cPanel doesn't allow it, but I think if you edit their valiases file, you could potentially do it. You might also have to add it to /etc/localdomains

I've never seen an email address given with a www in it though. Why does he want it like that?

    Sorry for the misunderstanding:

I meant creating an email adress like username@-.md

With just the little dash as as the domain name.

I can;t really try it on CPanel yet as he did not sign up for our services or transfered his domain name to our nameservers.

    Any ideas?

As far as I know, any domain extension should work.

    Thanks squirrel.

I know any domain extensions should work, but the thing is i think Cpanel could block it because its just a little dash as the domain name. The extension shouldnt really matter (we're hosting hundreds of unusual extensions.)

It's just the "-" that seems to be a problem with the cpanel software according to the person.

Yes, that will work. MD is the top level domain country code for Moldova.

    <edit>
Oh, you mean really a dash? I though you meant anything@somedomain.md...

Domains generally can't start or begin with -, so I don't think that's possible.
Also, most nics don't allow single character names.

Yeah i know, which is why it seemed REALLY weird that he was able to registerd a www.-.extension.

I cant even find any whois record for his domain name.

Anyway, final word is that cpanel cannot create username@-.extension. Right?

(thats what i thought all along. Didnt want to say no if it were untrue though.)

Thanks guys. You've all been great!

Maybe your client means anydomain.md, not the actual domain with a hyphen.

He actually registered -.md? If so, I don't know how and I doubt it would work for anything anyway since it's not a real domain.

Go to http://www.nic.md/whois.php and check it out. They don't allow starting or ending with a -, much less just being a dash.

I have a feeling that like elleryjh said, maybe the client is just using the dash as a placeholder, not wanting to give you the actual domain. Best bet is to let them know that it is possible, as long as that (-.md) is not the actual domain.

    Well he did say:

"I am the proud owner of the very rare www.-.md"
I was really surprised that someone could register a domain name like that, but all the whois search that i tried came up blank.

I think he got confused about what he owns.

    Weird stuff!

Internationalized domains, maybe. At least that's how those asian characters work.

Internationalized domains should be supported by cpanel by converting to punycode. I think it would look something like RZ--2864.com.
But email does not currently work with internationalized domains.

"I am the proud owner of the very rare www.-.md"
Tell him that I own the very rare www.-.com and I will be happy to sell it to him. Sorry, cash only...

For that matter, he may as well buy some Real Estate on the moon.
