Unable to login via SSH or SFTP

hi all. i've always been able to login via SFTP and SSH on a server running cpanel as root for the longest time up until now.

the server is set to update to the the latest stable version of whm/cpanel. has there been a part of the update that prevents connections via SFTP or SSH?

i was looking at it from a wrong perspective.

the problem wasn't with the sshd. the problem was with the host access list. sshd access was set to allowed with the following parameters: XXX.XXX.*.* to accommodate dynamic IP assignments from the ISP. this worked quite well for a while, as such, has been taken for granted. when the ISP changed everything and not just the last 2 segments, that's where the problem came in.

hope this helps anyone else out there who seem to be running into a wall.

by the way, here's a handy cpanel script that i came across during my quest for a solution:

http://your_server_ip:2086/scripts2/...safesshrestart

this resets your sshd to default config.
