Unable to update Perl from 5.8.0 to 5.8.8

We keeping getting the below response when attempting to upgrade. We believe it is that the Digest::MD5 module is not and will not install. We can not conduct the install because it is not installed. Does anyone know the work around for this problem?

We found the fix in one of the other update to Perl 5.8.8 threads.
