Up2date and pkgSkipList

Hi all,

as any Fedora/Redhat/RHEL users will know, Cpanel adds a whole bunch of things to the pkgSkipList for up2date including the following:

* kernel
* spamassassin
* httpd
* perl
* mysql
* php
* mod_ssl
* courier
* exim

Now a number of these things are installed by cpanel itself such as httpd, php, exim etc. My question is, how many of these is it safe to update using up2date? In the cases where cpanel has installed its own versions from source (not packaged), is it safe to simply remove the packaged version?

I don't like leaving old, unpatched packages lying around when they should be getting updated.

You should update the kernel, the others let cpanel handle.

Yup, completely agree. cPanel installs those other applications from source and runs ones that have been tested to work with cPanel, so you should never install/update anything in the skiplist through the OS vendor update application. Other than the kernel as ramprage said.

That doesn't quite answer my question. As mentioned, a number of those packages are actually installed, for example the stock RHEL packages for PHP. Given cpanel compiles and installs its own PHP, you would think I could remove the RHEL PHP packages (actually I would have thought cPanel would bail out during install since they were already around).

So it is safe to remove these packages which cPanel has installed itself? And if so, how many from my original list (e.g. httpd etc)?
