Default Urgent! Server crashed - how to migrate to new server

    Hello!

Urgent questions - we had a server crash and have only the backup of all datas...

How can we best migrate to a new server with all customer settings, home directories & mail settings/folders etc.

Old server - Fedora Core 4
    New server - CentOs

    Greetings!

    Bud Spencer

What type of backups do you have? I mean do you have the full cPanel backups or the backups of home directories and other things?

We have no complete backup - we still have the original datas via harddisk from the live system...

But we can not restore the system because of many missing libraries, bash problems etc. - we think that we got a rootkit

For example the library /lib/ld-linux.so.2 is missing and many more...

Nothings worked longer, no ls man etc. pp. - no new ssh session was possible....

but all datas are still on the server - the server is not longer on the net...

You should first determine why server has crashed. If you have problems with your hard disk, you won't be able to read all data from it. It would be better to bring it to a data recovery company, because every additional hour of being powered on can result in even more data loss.

Do you have any real backups, that is single-file packages made with something like tar or pax or the WHM control panel backups?. If you do not and all you have is the bad hard drive you were running with that is now dead or will not load, you will have to create a new Cpanel install on a new hard drive. If you do not have the computers local to you then your hosting provider will have to do this and then mount your damaged drive as a "mount point" to the good working drive and then figure out how much of the bad drive is usable.

I would really try to ask your hosting provider to help you figure out what you have left on your hard drives before you do anything.

nyjimbo: if the hard drive is damaged physically, or it is dying now, under no circumstances it should be mounted. An image should be made to a new drive, and all further filesystem repair operations should be done on the image. If one attempts to repair a filesystem on a damaged disk, it could result in even more damage.

True but he didnt say the drive was dying nor did he say his host would go through this for him. He said he had a drive with data that he wanted to use.
