Username length changed?

I have made several accts now with usernames longer than 8 successfully. I was under the impression that 8 was the limit. Has this changed? Is there a new length limit?

I think there were a few versions of cpanel that allowed this for some reason. Currently you cannot but I had created some before. If you search there are probably a few topics about username length.
